ROCKPORT
Rockport has become a major tourist town thanks to its great location at the tip of Cape Ann. The gorgeous terrain is a surefire draw for the town. Not only do
artists find inspiration in the nautical scenery, newcomers are enticed into relocating here because of the community's cozy feel. The relatively small population swells considerably during the summer months.
LOCATION
This picturesque town is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides, and neighbors with the city of Gloucester on the fourth. Rockport is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of city life to be considered a getaway locale, but close enough to satisfy an occasional "city craving." This Essex County community is only about 40 miles from Boston. To learn more about its geographical location, take a look at its official narrative as provided by the Commonwealth at:
Town of Rockport.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Rockport secured its place in the history books when on July 8, 1856 it became the site of a raid against "demon rum" led by Hannah Jumper. Together with 200 other women and male supporters in Dock Square, the group destroyed all the liquor they could find.
This act was in response to the men who used their three-month winter hiatus from fishing to consume large amounts of alcohol. This non-activity resulted in serious economic trouble for the town and was made worse by the amount of money wasted on buying liquor. The frustration level of the town reached its boiling point that July morning. To this day, Rockport remains a "dry town." In 1996, an effort to allow liquor sales in restaurants was soundly defeated at a town meeting.
